The Fundamental Sciences
Physics is the study of matter and its motion thorough space-time along with the study of nature, its interdependence and the mystery of the universe. It is a branch of physical science that helps in understanding the behavior of energy and forces in the universe and one of the oldest academic disciplines to have been studied. New ideas and concepts in physics are often in relation to mathematics and philosophy thereby leading to the interconnection between the universe, human thought and consciousness and the relationship between the processes of the universe and its functioning.
Chemistry is a branch of physical science but very distinct from physics. It is sometimes called ‘the central science’ because it can form bridges between physics and biology. Chemistry studies the composition, structure, properties and transformation of matter. Chemistry has an interface with almost all aspects and disciplines of science leading to the study of all matter at various levels to include elementary particle study at the atom level, composite study at the level of molecules and compounds and their associated physical, chemical , structural and functional properties.
Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms to include their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Modern biology is an eclectic mix of varied fields composed of many branches and subdisciplines. The various branches and subdivisions of biology are defined according to the scale at which organisms are studied. Broadly, biology can be divided into botany and zoology; the study of plants and animals respectively.
The crosstalk of physics, chemistry and biology leads to the juncture of emergence of various interdisciplinary aspects of science. Biochemistry, biophysics, physiology, environmental science, ecology, physical chemistry, organic chemistry etc. are some such examples.
It is of utmost importance to study the fundamental sciences along with cross linkages to understand how living and non living systems are impacted at the micro and macro levels.
Mathematics is the study of quantity, space, structure and change in various patterns to lead to new dimensions and conjectures. Abstraction, logic, calculation, counting, measurement, systematic study of shapes and changes of physical objects are some of the branches of mathematics that have a crosstalk with the physical sciences.
